Cara Therapeutics was formed in order to take advantage of new opportunities to develop safer, more effective analgesics. Pain is the most prevalent medical condition, but is frequently under-treated due to limited efficacy or harmful side effects of currently available products, such as centrally acting opiates and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In order to address this need, Cara plans to develop specific classes of peripherally selective  analgesics. These compounds are targeted to multiple types of pain relieving receptors present in different parts of the body outside the brain, avoiding or minimizing brain receptor activation. In addition, Cara aims to develop a future pipeline of first-in-class molecules at novel analgesic and anti-inflammatory targets using its proprietary drug screening technology. These molecules are designed to provide maximum pain relief with limited side effects.

Business Strategy

Cara is strategically focused on identifying business partners with a shared vision of providing optimal pain management therapies which minimize drug-related side-effects and address the unmet medical needs of millions of patients worldwide.

The company is identifying strategic partnerships that:
  • provide clinical development and marketing expertise to enhance the commercial potential of Cara drug candidates, and/or
  • provide drug discovery and development expertise which complement those available at Cara

In April 2005, Cara entered into a collaborative agreement with Ferring Pharmaceuticals in order to identify novel selective analgesic drug candidates targeting a peripheral receptor. Cara aims to file an IND for the first drug candidate from this program in 2007.

In January 2006, Cara entered into a worldwide license agreement with ALZA corporation, a J&J company, for the clinical development of CR665.
